Marriage Counseling

Marriage Counseling is remarkably effective when dealing with the question of whether or not to marry. Often times, people are side tracked by seeking qualities in a partner that are different from or the same as mom, dad or a previous lover. That is not a useful path of inquiry. Rather than evaluating your partner, it is more beneficial to evaluate the quality of the relationship that you share, the potential for the relationship you want to create, and the motivation to grow together in that direction.

In order to create and sustain the emotional bond of marriage, it is important to know whether or not both of you want the same kind of relationship. Do you share similar values? Do you want to relate to one another in similar fashion? Do you share similar views on parenting? Do you want to be on the same team in sharing life’s goals for personal, social, family, financial, and spiritual growth? In short, do you share a relationship vision?

Critically important to the attachment of marriage is the viability of your emotional connection. Are you there for each other? Are you confident that your partner will respond to you when you need that connection? What is the quality of your friendship? How well do you really know each other? Are you sensitive to your partner’s internal world? Your relationship with your marriage partner is different from any other in that it is more intimate and addresses our dependency needs.

It is also important to learn the skills to effectively manage your differences so that your thoughts and feelings are heard and respected. When your common ground is trust, respect and authentic communication, you are far more capable of sustaining a long-term commitment. Marriage Counseling provides the safety and the language to have this dialogue and to create individual goals to bring about and sustain your desired relationship vision.
